Another palm sized keyboard, this time with touchpad

I guess I spoke a little too soon in my last post. ChinaVasion is now selling this small portable keyboard for $40.37/€27.84, which is quite a bit more expensive than that DealExtreme keyboard. However, this one does add a touchpad and a rechargeable battery. The keyboard doesn’t use Bluetooth, but instead goes for the classic USB wireless radio dongle. However, it does have the weirdest button placement. Just look at the awfully layed out enter and cursor keys. At least you know you’re real hardcore if you manage to finishing Modern Warfare 2 with this keyboard and touchpad.

For some reason, cheap ultra small Bluetooth keyboard are just non-existent. Sure, DealExtreme was already selling another mini keyboard for practically the same price, but that one has horrible squishy tv remote like rubber keys. While the Mini Palm Size Wireless Bluetooth Media Keyboard for $24.73/€17.02 isn’t as sexy as the Logitech diNovo Mini and doesn’t have a touchpad, it’s at least reasonably priced and seems comfortable enough for some thumb typing. It uses the regular Bluetooth HID protocol, so it should work with most Bluetooth devices. I ordered mine already, so expect a review within a few weeks. Hopefully it will work with the SmartQ devices. That two button space bar looks quite awkward though.

Custom keyboard layout for SmartQ 5 / 7 MID

While the default software keyboard of the SmartQ 5 / 7 functions pretty well, there were some things I just didn’t like. The cursor keys had a horrible layout (up, down, left, right on one line), you couldn’t enter any special characters, it didn’t have function keys and the backspace key was just too small. I decided to make my own keyboard layout…
