Ramos T11TE review

Functionality and performance

Interface

The Ramos R11TE uses a Flash based interface with some nice animations. It’s a huge improvement over most other Chinese PMPs(except Meizu) with their ugly and static interfaces. Icons are large enough so you don’t need a stylus to control the device. A downside is that everything is folder based, so you don’t get the media library features you find on most modern media players. Overall, the user interface is not as slick as those found on devices like the iPod, Zune or the Archos players, but it works fine enough.

Video

With video playback being the major selling point for this device, it’s good to know that the Ramos T11TE shines in this area. From WMV to AVI to MKV, everything plays very smoothly. Even with 1080p files, playback was pretty much flawless. Only Motion JPEG files straight out of my camera didn’t play, which wasn’t suprising because it’s a rather heavy file format that is primary used for video editing.
The T11TE supports different audio tracks and subtitles. Subtitles are a bit buggy though: sometimes they didn’t show up when they were turned on. Fiddling around with reloading the video or turning them off and on again fixed this most times, but still it’s quite annoying. Hopefully this will be fixed in the next firmware update.
Another minor gripe is that there aren’t any equalizer or image adjustments settings for videos.

Audio

Audio playback on the Ramos T11TE is pretty bare bones. It does play all popular file formats flawlessly and displays cover art, but there isn’t much else to it. The folder based structure of the interface makes it harder to find a particular song and the device doesn’t even have a shuffle function. Equalizer settings are also limited to five presets.

Other functionality

Besides audio and video playback, the Ramos T11TE also has an ebook reader function. While it has some nice options like changing the background, it only opens plain text files. No ePub, PDF or other filetypes are supported, rendering this function quite useless.
The image viewer isn’t much better. The problem is that every image is scaled down to the maximum screen size, so it isn’t very useful for viewing photos from your camera. There is a zoom function, but it zooms in on the scaled down image instead of the original, making it only pixelized.
Other functions are barely worth mentioning. It has a stopwatch, alarm clock, calendar, world clock and a calculator. The strangest feature is the flower widget. All it does is placing a flower on the screen that animates when you touch it. It’s so useless that it rocks.
Too bad they didn’t include some basic games.

I already posted this on the YT video, but I guess I’ll post it here anyway

How does the Tokyo Magnitude video, or anime in general, play? Do the subtitles show up properly/readable? Do they play smoothly?

    • Video playback is very smooth. No problems at all. Subtitles were a problem though. It seemed quite random whether or not they popped up. Quite annoying. However, when they work, it’s all smooth and readable. If you have the option of burned in subtitles, that seems to be the way to go until there is a firmware update that fixes the problem.

What would you recommend as a portable anime player without conversion, if the subtitles on this player are quite random?

        • I just received the Ramos T17HD and it handles subtitles just fine. Works great with MKV, although it is a bit less powerful than the T11TE. Heavy 1080p videos are less smooth and WMV files aren’t supported. Expect a full review soon.

Does 720p run fine? I don’t have any videos in 1080p so 1080p doesn’t really matter to me.

I was going to get this one but ended up getting the T12HD. Hey, you wouldn’t happen to still have the original wallpaper that came on the T11TE, would you? (this one: http://www.jiongtang.com/blog/wp-content/uploads/2009/12/T11TE-RE-20.jpg) I’ve been looking for it everywhere! Could you possibly upload it somewhere (like imageshack)?

    where can i buy it?

  6. Yeah, 720p works flawless.
