Video glasses, marketed using a porn star

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

Every pervert healthy young man immediately recognizes the lovely girl in the product photo as no one less than Sasha Grey in her suprisingly non-porn movie The Girlfriend Experience. Whether Chinavasion did this on purpose or not, I couldn’t think of a more clever way of selling a one-man cinema to mankind than using an adult movie star to promote it. This pair of video glasses costs a mere $134.58/€101.20 and comes with a little media player that has a built-in 1.3MP camera, 2GB of flash memory, SD card slot and is capable of playing videos, music and NES/Sega Megadrive/Gameboy Advance games on a 40″ virtual screen. Of course, it’s also possible to connect any other device with an RGB out port, like DVD players and video game consoles.  The only downside is that the resolution of 320×240 pixels per eye isn’t exactly staggering, although it’s not fair to expect much more from a product with a price tag like this.

First tablet / MID for less than $140

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

For those who don’t want to spend hundreds of dollars on some touchscreen surfing and mailing, this little device might be interesting. The 2GB HD 7″ Touch Screen WiFi Portable MID UMPC White at ChinaBuye costs only $138.26/€103.65 and like the title suggests, it has a 7″ 800×480 touchscreen, 2GB flash memory and 802.11B/G wifi,  but isn’t a UMPC. According to the description the device is able to run Windows CE 6 and Android, although it’s very unlikely that Android will be running smoothly: it’s powered by a measly 300MHz processor and comes with only 128MB RAM. Still, there are a lot of things that should be possible to do on this tablet. Use it as a cookbook in the kitchen, control your webserver via Wifi or just check your mail and play minesweeper.

MP3 players are now cheaper than a pack of cigarettes

Thursday, April 1st, 2010

I wrote about this iPod shuffle knockoff  before, but it’s now available available for even less at Focalprice. Priced at $5.98/€4.43, the Mini  MP3 Portable Digital Player costs less than what you pay here for a pack of Lucky Strikes (which will set you back €4.80/$6.46 in Holland). And that includes world wide shipping all the way from Hong Kong. The players are also available in other colors, but expect to pay up to $0.95/€0.70 more for those. The quest for the cheapest MP3 player continues…

Shameless Wii remote clone for the PS3

Tuesday, March 30th, 2010

If you thought the Playstation Move was a shameless attempt to jump on the Wii bandwagon, you probably haven’t seen this gem yet. For $32.56/€24.17, you can now waggle your way through the Playstation 3 game library. The 3D Motion Freedom Controller doesn’t have a nunchuk or the pointer functionality of the Wii, but it’s not like your parents will notice that when waving the controller around like a mad monkey. At least it comes with a totally awesome steering wheel so you still get that Mario Kart feeling when playing Gran Turismo. It’s also compatible with PCs. Hardcore gamers only.

Apple iPad worldwide pre-orders in dollar prices

Saturday, March 13th, 2010

Hong Kong based AllPMP is now taking pre-orders for the much hyped Apple iPad. Starting at $578.99/€423.95 for the 16GB version, it costs considerably less than the 499 euros that Apple will be charging in Europe. It’s not very useful for the Americans amongst us, but those living somewhere else where the iPad will cost more or doesn’t even have a release date, might be delighted by the fact that AllPMP ships worldwide. Besides the 16GB version, they also take pre-orders for the 32GB version for $698.99/€507.80 and the 64GB version for $798.99/€580.45. Depending on the model, they expect to receive 40-100 units between 8 and 16 April, so you got to be quick before they sell out.

New apple MP3 player with speakers looks quite familiar

Friday, February 26th, 2010

What do you do if your products go unnoticed, because all other cheap MP3 player manufacturers from China keep slapping Apple logos on their gadgets? Yep, you just take it to the next level by designing a whole device to look like the famous fruity logo. You can get the Apple Shaped Rechargeable Portable Music Stereo Speaker with FM Radio + SD/MMC/USB/3.5mm (Black) for $26.50/€19.64, or get the red or orange version for the same price. It’s basically a rechargeable speaker with a built in FM radio and MP3 player. No built-in memory, but it sports a USB port and SD card slot. It also comes with a remote and adapters to connect Sony Ericsson and Nokia phones. Oddly, no iPod or iPhone adapters are included, so you need to connect those using the good ol’ 3.5mm jack.

Three cheap LED video lights shipping at DealExtreme

Thursday, February 25th, 2010

Those of you who love to make videos know how hard it is to shoot in low light conditions. Luckily, DealExtreme just added three low cost LED video lights to their product catalogue. They can all be mounted on a regular hot shoe or a tripod, so you could use them with most camcorders and dSLR cameras. The one on the left is the 2*AA Powered 35-LED 5000-6000K Video Light for Camcorder and costs $29.84/€22.02. The next one is the 36-LED Rechargeable 5500K Video Light for Camcorder (100~240V) that goes for $33.51/€24.73. Unfortunately, it comes with a 3-pin adapter, so those who don’t live in the UK will need to buy this adapter if you live in a country with US plugs or this adapter if you live somewhere else in Europe. Finally, there is the 4*AA Powered 30-LED Video Light for Camcorder on the right with a price tag of $32.83/€24.23.  This one doesn’t come with a with a mounting platform, so those with a camera without hot shoe are out of luck. I decided to order the last one, so expect a review and videos as soon as it arrives.

Cigarette lighter cellphone… I always needed that.

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

Some people say that China doesn’t innovate and only steals ideas, but have you ever seen cellphone with a built-in cigarette lighter before? I hope not. Besides the lighter, the Machismo lacks any other killer features. It’s still one of those dime a dozen triband mehh-phones, with a low res screen and a VGA camera. I also wonder if a built-in lighter increases the chance of your cellphone exploding. Oh well, health risks don’t seem to bother smokers anyway. Get the Machismo for $68.51/€49.68 at Chinavasion.
