Ainol V9000HDA review

Functionality and performance

Interface

The interface of the Ainol V9000HDA looks pretty nice, although it’s sometimes a bit clumbersome to use. Because the device has a resistive touchscreen, drag motions to scroll through items are sometimes mistaken as a click, which is annoying. The layout of the main menu is also quite illogical. While the device has more than enough screen estate to display all items, Ainol desided to use a bar at the bottom of the screen which you have to drag to the left or right to get to all the menu options. Finally, the English translation is absolutely horrible. It’s not like you won’t know what an option does,

Video

Video playback on the Ainol V9000HDA is pretty much flawless. All tested MKV, AVI, Quicktime and WMV files played very smoothly, even the 1080p files. I’m pretty sure it’s possible to bring the device to it’s knees by playing huge BluRay rips, but those who mainly download movies from the web in popular file types will be very satisfied. Subtitles and multiple audiotracks also work fine, but the subtitles are displayed in a white font without a shadow or outline. This might be hard to read in very bright scenes. Another complaint is that it isn’t possible to turn off the subtitles. Hopefully this will be fixed with a firmware update. Other than that, everything works perfectly.

Music playback

Like most media players from China, the Ainol V9000HDA plays pretty much everything you throw at it. MP3, AAC, OGG, WAV, FLAC etc: they all play without a hiccup. However, unlike the Ramos players I’ve tested, songs can be sorted by artist, album or genre. The player also has a shuffle function and 8 equalizer presets, although it isn’t possible to manually adjust the equalizer settings. Album art is displayed fine and overall, it’s a nice audio player. Downsides are that it doesn’t have gapless playback, so you hear a slight pause between songs and sometimes albums show up multiple times in the media library.
Another annoyance is that the volume controls don’t work when the screen is turned off. Hopefully Ainol will fix these issues.

FM radio and transmitter

FM radio is a feature that’s too often missing on portable media players. Fortunately, it’s on the Ainol V9000HDA and works quite well. Like most portable players, it uses the headphones as an antenna and the reception is usually decent. Unfortunately, it’s not possible to play the sound through the speakers while having the headphones plugged in.
A nice added feature to the V9000HDA is the FM transmitter. When turned on, every sound is transmitted to a particular FM frequency, so any radio can be used as a speaker. The only downside is that this also uses the headphones as an antenna. The output is related to the volume of the player and the music keeps playing through the headphones. This means you got to be careful that you don’t blow up the earbuds by increasing the volume on the player too much.

Other functionality

The Ainol V9000HDA has some standard extra features: a picture viewer, an txt file reader, a calendar and a voice recorder. The calendar has the days noted in Chinese characters, but the other features basically function as expected.

Cool review. I have a cowon a2 and am surprised how cheap you can now get decent video players. Are there any tests which formats exactly it can play? Mpeg? Mpeg2? MotionJPG?

    • Motion JPEG doesn’t work because every frame is stored individually, so hardware acceleration is quite difficult. I haven’t found any PMP that does. The rest basically works just fine.

      Translated from the Ainol website:

‘V9000HDA full support for HD video encoding: H.264 (BP / MP / HP), Mpeg2 (MP), MPEG4 (SP / ASP) / Xvid (SP / AP), VC-1 (SP / MP / AP), WMV9 ( SP / MP / AP), and general video coding: Mpeg1, H.263, DivX (3.11/4/5/6), RMVB (rvg2/rv7/rv8/rv9/rv10), M-jpeg (B), so that FULL HD + products efficiently solve the MP4 video decoding problem. V9000HDA, more excellent ability, perfect compatible with TS, AVI, MP4, MPG, MKV, DAT, VOB, WMV, ASF, PMP, RM, RMVB, MOV, M2V, QT, M2A, and other major package formats. ‘

  4. Hi, I would be extremely grateful if you could tell me how to get my Ainol V9000HDG (very similar to HDA) to output successfully to HDMI or HDTV. Although it has the jacks and cables, the TVs ignore it (two different shops tried, several TVs, doesn’t work for either HDMI or for HDTVno luck). The menus don’t seem to offer any switching options to HDMI or HDTV. Although the menus are in English, the manual is in Chinese. I’ve tried far and wide locally here in New Zealand and worldwide via the web, email, websites, phoning, no luck. Has anyone managed to get theirs to work? Thanks, Bruce Thomson, Palmerston North, New Zealand.

I have got a Ainol V8000HDX, but should work simular. Go to SETTINGS and choose OUTPUT. Select HDMI_720_50HZ or 60HZ or if you have fullHD TV then choose HDMI_1080_50HZ or 60HZ.
After this your Ainol screen will turn off, but dont worry, now you may connect to your tv with the right cables and the streaming is accomplished.

I have got this player and it rocks XD
    plays flv,
have output up to 1080p, 60hz on my 50 inch, works great + remote control is awesome
on the go (OTG) is super handy, use external devices like a PC. FM transmitter is good in the car.

Its got nearly everything you could want from a media player, except WIFI. Best player i have had so far and the price is really good, makes ipods look like a rip off. Sound is very good and video is perfect.

    Highly recommend it. XD

    Hi

What do you think, can I use this device mainly as a music player. I want to replace mit brocken iPod Touch.

    Btw
i love your website especially the SmartQ review. First I look on this site, and then I buy the devices

    • Sorry for my late response. But as a music player, I wouldn’t recommend the Ainol V9000HDA. Especially not if you’re used to the iPod Touch. The interface of the Ainol is much worse. This is less of an issue with movie playback, because you’re less likely to change videos every x minutes.

Thank you for the compliment. You also reminded me that I still need to review the SmartQ R7 ;)

    Hello,
just one clarification: when you say, “Subtitles [...] also work fine” do you mean subtitles embedded in containers like MKV or external ones (like .srt, .ssa) or both?
    Thank you

Excellent review thanks. I’ve just got mine on ebay for £46 (UK).
Is there no way we can apply some pressure on these companies?
It makes no sense to advertise to and sell to English speakers
and supply it with a totally useless manual that has obviously just been
stuck in Google Translate from the Chinese version. There are thousands of English speakers in the Chinesen business community. They must have been able to come up with a better effort than this?

Is it LTPS screen ? Does it or the Ramos surpass the screen quality
