Design

The Ainol V9000HDA is probably the slickest designed PMP from china. Even though the case of device is made of plastic with only an aluminium backplate, it’s very solid. The minimalistic design with a matte white finish gives the Ainol a high quality look and feel. Unlike the Ramos T11TE, this touchscreen player also has some hardware volume controls and buttons for navigation, which are very useful. Compared to other players, the Ainol is a bit on the thick side, but still very comfortable to hold.

Hardware
The touchscreen of the Ainol V9000HDA is great. Unlike devices like the iPod Touch or the Zune, it has a resistive touchscreen, so you have to press a bit harder on the screen. It’s still quite responsive and the screen quality is very good. Viewing angles and colors are good and a resolution of 800×480 is about as sharp as it gets on a screen with these dimensions. Compared to the Ramos T11TE, the screen quality is much better, although it’s a bit less clear than the Ramos T17FHD because of the added touch layer. The Ainol V9000 also has vibration feedback, but I found this to be quite annoying because it rumbles at every touch. Luckily, this can be turned off.
Using the RGB and HDMI outputs, you can easily connect the Ainol V9000HDA to any television. Once you set it up, the device functions as a media player, with a more basic interface that can be controlled using the remote.
The Ainol V9000 has 8 or 16GB built-in flash memory and a MicroSD card slot in case you need more storage. It’s also possible to connect any USB drive using the supplied USB OTG cable. This is especially useful at home. Just connect a USB hard drive and use it as a media player for your tv.
While the factory specs rate the battery life as 5 hours of video playback and 10 hours of music playback, my personal experience is that it’s about an hour shorter for both in normal conditions.
There are stereo speakers on the backside of the device, but as usual, sound quality is nothing to write home about. Good enough to show a short video to a friend, but you don’t want to watch a movie using the speakers. The maximum volume is also very low.

Cool review. I have a cowon a2 and am surprised how cheap you can now get decent video players. Are there any tests which formats exactly it can play? Mpeg? Mpeg2? MotionJPG?
Motion JPEG doesn’t work because every frame is stored individually, so hardware acceleration is quite difficult. I haven’t found any PMP that does. The rest basically works just fine.
Translated from the Ainol website:
‘V9000HDA full support for HD video encoding: H.264 (BP / MP / HP), Mpeg2 (MP), MPEG4 (SP / ASP) / Xvid (SP / AP), VC-1 (SP / MP / AP), WMV9 ( SP / MP / AP), and general video coding: Mpeg1, H.263, DivX (3.11/4/5/6), RMVB (rvg2/rv7/rv8/rv9/rv10), M-jpeg (B), so that FULL HD + products efficiently solve the MP4 video decoding problem. V9000HDA, more excellent ability, perfect compatible with TS, AVI, MP4, MPG, MKV, DAT, VOB, WMV, ASF, PMP, RM, RMVB, MOV, M2V, QT, M2A, and other major package formats. ‘

Hi, I would be extremely grateful if you could tell me how to get my Ainol V9000HDG (very similar to HDA) to output successfully to HDMI or HDTV. Although it has the jacks and cables, the TVs ignore it (two different shops tried, several TVs, doesn’t work for either HDMI or for HDTVno luck). The menus don’t seem to offer any switching options to HDMI or HDTV. Although the menus are in English, the manual is in Chinese. I’ve tried far and wide locally here in New Zealand and worldwide via the web, email, websites, phoning, no luck. Has anyone managed to get theirs to work? Thanks, Bruce Thomson, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
I have got a Ainol V8000HDX, but should work simular. Go to SETTINGS and choose OUTPUT. Select HDMI_720_50HZ or 60HZ or if you have fullHD TV then choose HDMI_1080_50HZ or 60HZ.
After this your Ainol screen will turn off, but dont worry, now you may connect to your tv with the right cables and the streaming is accomplished.
Thanky Thanky for all this good iofrnmation!

I have got this player and it rocks XD
plays flv,
have output up to 1080p, 60hz on my 50 inch, works great + remote control is awesome
on the go (OTG) is super handy, use external devices like a PC. FM transmitter is good in the car.
Its got nearly everything you could want from a media player, except WIFI. Best player i have had so far and the price is really good, makes ipods look like a rip off. Sound is very good and video is perfect.
Highly recommend it. XD
Hey from where you get the remote control?
i need one! can you say me from where you have it.
Thanks!!
Sorry I’m not sure as i got mine with the player.
Hi
What do you think, can I use this device mainly as a music player. I want to replace mit brocken iPod Touch.
Btw
i love your website especially the SmartQ review. First I look on this site, and then I buy the devices
Sorry for my late response. But as a music player, I wouldn’t recommend the Ainol V9000HDA. Especially not if you’re used to the iPod Touch. The interface of the Ainol is much worse. This is less of an issue with movie playback, because you’re less likely to change videos every x minutes.
Thank you for the compliment. You also reminded me that I still need to review the SmartQ R7
Thank you for the answer.
You need the V5-II, too. I have one, and this little device is really cool ^.^
Hello,
just one clarification: when you say, “Subtitles [...] also work fine” do you mean subtitles embedded in containers like MKV or external ones (like .srt, .ssa) or both?
Thank you
I ordinarily do not submit in Blogs but your weblog forced me to, astounding do the job.. lovely …
Excellent review thanks. I’ve just got mine on ebay for £46 (UK).
Is there no way we can apply some pressure on these companies?
It makes no sense to advertise to and sell to English speakers
and supply it with a totally useless manual that has obviously just been
stuck in Google Translate from the Chinese version. There are thousands of English speakers in the Chinesen business community. They must have been able to come up with a better effort than this?
Is it LTPS screen ? Does it or the Ramos surpass the screen quality
of my old Smart Q T-5 II that i have with LTPS screen ? Thanks
