Ainol V9000HDA review

Hooray, another PMP review. This time it’s the Ainol V9000HDA, a media player with a 4.3″ 800×480 touchscreen, 1080p video playback, FM radio / transmitter and a rather slick design. Read on to find out if it can hang with the other portable players from China.

Introduction

I bought the Ainol V9000HDA 8GB from HouseOfDap for $123/€97.71 with free shipping. The device shipped within hours and it took a bit more than a week to arrive here in Holland. Not too bad, considering it was around the time most airports in Europe were shut down because of an ash cloud caused by a vulcano in Iceland. The device is also available at AllPMP for $128.99, but that price doesn’t include shipping, although you get some extra accessories. I recommend getting it from HouseOfDap.

Cool review. I have a cowon a2 and am surprised how cheap you can now get decent video players. Are there any tests which formats exactly it can play? Mpeg? Mpeg2? MotionJPG?

    • Motion JPEG doesn’t work because every frame is stored individually, so hardware acceleration is quite difficult. I haven’t found any PMP that does. The rest basically works just fine.

      Translated from the Ainol website:

‘V9000HDA full support for HD video encoding: H.264 (BP / MP / HP), Mpeg2 (MP), MPEG4 (SP / ASP) / Xvid (SP / AP), VC-1 (SP / MP / AP), WMV9 ( SP / MP / AP), and general video coding: Mpeg1, H.263, DivX (3.11/4/5/6), RMVB (rvg2/rv7/rv8/rv9/rv10), M-jpeg (B), so that FULL HD + products efficiently solve the MP4 video decoding problem. V9000HDA, more excellent ability, perfect compatible with TS, AVI, MP4, MPG, MKV, DAT, VOB, WMV, ASF, PMP, RM, RMVB, MOV, M2V, QT, M2A, and other major package formats. ‘

  4. Hi, I would be extremely grateful if you could tell me how to get my Ainol V9000HDG (very similar to HDA) to output successfully to HDMI or HDTV. Although it has the jacks and cables, the TVs ignore it (two different shops tried, several TVs, doesn’t work for either HDMI or for HDTVno luck). The menus don’t seem to offer any switching options to HDMI or HDTV. Although the menus are in English, the manual is in Chinese. I’ve tried far and wide locally here in New Zealand and worldwide via the web, email, websites, phoning, no luck. Has anyone managed to get theirs to work? Thanks, Bruce Thomson, Palmerston North, New Zealand.
